Chapter Newsletter          OCTOBER  2008

From the President:

Lee Malmborg

Our Summer is about to end and we can look forward to another year of Great Social Dancing! The last dance of the Summer was sparsely attended but we had several new couples joining us for the first time. We covered our expenses and most of all everyone had a good time.

Another live music event (Randy Litch) has been added for December 20th dance.  That dance occurs the last weekend before Christmas and we are hoping that live music will add more of a holiday atmosphere.

The Chapter is supporting the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) Dance Contest again this year. There appears to be a larger turnout than last year’s. There currently are more ladies signed up than men so we need to locate some men interested in learning the Cha-Cha.  This is a great opportunity for anyone that needs help with that dance.  Participants receive 8 to 9 one hour lessons for a suggested donation of $40.00. That is half the cost of group lessons.  All proceeds go to the CFC designated charities.  The CFC contest will be held November 7th at the Bremerton Middle School on Perry Ave.

Our Chapter is supporting the CFC to help raise money for charities and to promote ballroom dancing.  Our Chapter’s cost is minimal for the advertising we receive.

Please note that our Chapter is also sponsoring dance lessons on Monday and Thursday evenings at the Masonic Temple. See the details in this issue or on the web at usadancekitsap.org.

Northwest DanceSport Championships will be held in Seattle October 25 and 26, 2008 at the Hilton Seattle Airport Hotel and Conference Center.  A block of rooms has been reserved at the Hilton Hotel at a reduced rate.  If you are interested in staying over make sure you book early.  For additional information go to http://www.usadanceseattle.org/nwregional/

We will see you on the dance floor!

From the Chapter Board

Chapter Board Meetings are held as listed below.  All members are welcome to attend.

Tim Bruhn advised that he had acquired a more compatible mixer for the Chapter’s sound system.   He      is testing it and if all goes well it will enhance the tunes at one of the next dances.

The Board authorized the purchase of shelving for the storage area in the Masonic Temple.  Many    thanks to Dick Curtis and Lee Malmborg for installing the shelves.

The Board authorized the addition of an additional live band for 2008.  See President’s Letter.

The Board agreed to publish notes of appreciation in the Newsletter for businesses that support the        Chapter.  Note the one for “Anthony’s Restaurant” in this issue.

A LITTLE SCOOP ON SAMBA

Sheila Spiro

It is said that the Samba originated in 1917 and was adopted by Brazilian society in 1930.  This national symbol of Brazil was introduced into the United States by the late Carmen Miranda in 1939.  Samba no Pe with it’s beautiful ornate, feathery costumes and oversized head dresses is the Samba style you see if you have ever attended “Carnivale”.   Danced “solo” by men and women, Samba no Pe is chock full of undulations, hip shimmy and syncopated foot work.

Sambas de Gafieira – couples Samba – also known as Brazilian Tango is popular due to its energetic movements and connection between the couple.  Ballroom Samba was formalized in 1956 by Pierre Lavelle.  This rhythmic, pulsing dance style is a musical construction made with a binary time and a syncopated rhythm.  Danced with a smooth steady bounce in 2/4 meter, Ballroom Samba is characterized by fun playful hip movement, close rounded movement as a couple, often flirtatious, and traveling steps.

Sheila Spiro

From the Coordinator’s Corner this edition, I am pleased to announce our continuing with Monday evening classes with instructor, Christine Luders and welcoming back Doug Henry for Thursday evening classes!  This expansion of the dance class program was made with varying dancer’s preferences, several rhythms, and access to two great instructors two nights per week in mind.

If it has been a while since you made dance class a priority in your life, take the first step and send in your registration for a couple of these great classes.  On Mondays September 8 – October 13, Christine will be working with us on East Coast Swing at 7 PM and Salsa at 8 PM.  Christine’s expertise and technique ensure that both of these rhythms will contribute to your fitness program, tone up your legs, make you look great on the floor, and keep you smiling.

Our long time friend, Doug Henry’s Thursday evening classes, September 4 – October 2 are designed to offer you a second night of the week option for classes and get you home a little earlier.  Night Club Two Step will start at 6:30 PM and West Coast Swing will be at 7:30 PM.  Doug’s well known easy going teaching technique creates a relaxed atmosphere where beginners build their confidence and their desire to keep learning.

Bring your registration form and payment with you to class.  Classes with fewer than 15 students may be cancelled.  Please bring leather soled shoes.  Ladies, no backless shoes, thongs (flip flops) or wedges please.  These are hazardous and impair your ability to maneuver the dance floor.

Something to keep in mind; it is difficult to learn higher level figures until your technique becomes first nature.  While Christine and Doug strive to accommodate many levels of dance ability, reviewing in beginner level classes strengthens your dancing by enforcing proper technique.  Even the basic dance figures appear to be higher level and more elegant when done with great posture and in team work with your dance partners!

What rhythms and level of dancing are you interested in learning?  I love to hear your feed back!  E-mail me at: rtspiro@msn.com – or call 662-8924.

Look for registration forms elsewhere in the newsletter!

Please register for classes early whenever possible.  Having funds in hand well prior to the start of a series insures our ability to avoid cancellation due to lack of participation.

Always bring leather soled dance shoes and come early so you have time to be ready and in place on time.
