Chapter Newsletter July 2008
Lee Malmborg
Greetings Fellow Dancers!
The first dance held at the Masonic Temple was an improvement over Parkwood in that the acoustics were better; the floor is larger, ample parking and the Masonic Temple is more centrally located. There were lots of positive comments about the floor and the close table arrangement providing a more social environment. Also some recommendations made to change the seating arrangement for better use of the center floor section and relocation of the music to the stage. I think that the dance was enjoyed by everyone and attendance was above normal. Unfortunately, we had to cancel the May dance due to a scheduling error and were unable to try another dance floor configuration. With live music (Casanova) at the June’s dance the band will be on the stage and we will implement some of the other suggested changes. If you have any other suggestions on our dances feel free to address them to one of the Board Members.
We attempted to notify everyone of the need to cancel May’s dance by phone and email. If you didn’t get notified it may be that we don’t have your email or phone number on our list. Please let us know of any changes or if you would like to be added to our lists.
The Chapter sponsored dance lessons are doing very well thanks to Sheila’s outstanding efforts. Lessons will continue through July and then start again in September. The lesson schedule will be provided on the Chapter’s Website and the next series of lessons are also included in this issue.
We have a new Chapter Secretary. Claudette Mason has accepted a new position in Tacoma and with the additional commute she asked to be relieved of that duty. Jackie Curtis has agreed to be our Secretary. I wish to thank Claudette for her help over the past year and to thank Jackie for stepping in to fill the void.
One of my priorities is to improve the way we publicize our dances. In talking to new members and visitors most people have found out about our dances by word of mouth or through the Chapter sponsored dances. A few have seen the newspaper ads. Newspaper ads are expensive and our budget is limited. I’m asking all of you to help publicize our dances through word of mouth and handing out flyers.
Steve Whybark was involved with the Boys and Girls Club in Mason County and has agreed to help us coordinate a youth dance education program with the West Sound Boys and Girls Club in this area. Our hope is that this Chapter can help with some of the funding for an instructor and other volunteer service. If you would be interested in helping with this program please contact me.
Some other changes are being made to the schedule.
We didn’t hold a dance last August but we will have a dance this August.
The first month of each quarter in 2009 we will have live music.
The ending time for the dances with live music will be 11:00 PM rather than 10:30 PM.
We will see you on the dance floor!

We now have 72 members. If I can answer any questions regarding membership in our Chapter please give a call (360-662-8924) or send an e-mail (rtspiro@msn.com) and let me help you.
From the Chapter Board
Chapter Board Meetings are held as listed below. All members are welcome to attend.
♫ Treasurer Tim Bruhn advises we are operating in the black (just barely) which is just fine.
♫ If you have noticed some problems with the sound system in the past, we are hoping to fix that with a mixer that is more compatible with the speakers. By selling the old one we should be able to make this change with little or no net cost to the Chapter.
♫ There were several comments on seating and speaker arrangements for the new venue at the Masonic Temple. The tables in the center worked well but we were at about maximum capacity with that layout. With the live band Casanova at the June dance we will have the band on the stage and move the tables to the kitchen side of the dance floor. That should provide more seating and avoid the problem of people crossing the dance area. As we learn more about what works best we will adjust. Your comments are most welcome.
♫ The Board agreed to publish notes of appreciation in the Newsletter for businesses that support the Chapter. Note the one for “Anthony’s Restaurant” in this issue.
♫ The Board was informed that Matt Jensen, one of those who got the Chapter started, is in the area for summer and is available for floor time! He may be contacted at (602)309-2736.

Move With Class!
Sheila Spiro
If you have missed out on our “ON-GOING TANGO” class this series, those great Tango moves catching your eye out on the floor will have you green with envy. Students in this series enjoyed taking their Tango basics to a higher level by focusing on technique resulting in stronger lead and follow skills. This series will run a total of 10 weeks (basic & on-going) and ends June 23.
NOTES FROM A COORDINATOR
Sheila Spiro
Greeting fellow dancers! In my corner this issue you’ll see several little blurbs about dance classes. Notice how our dance program is thriving and ever changing in effort to meet the interests of our membership of seasoned and new dancers.

We have been privileged to gain the support and participation of Christine Luders for our Monday night classes and are grateful to Doug Henry, Matt Jensen, Jan Madison and Seth Shipley for their vivid contributions. Good instructors possess multi-faceted qualities. Strong leadership, highly trained professionalism, skilled demonstrators, crystal clear teaching, technique building – all are what we have come to know thru our fine instructors. We thank each of you for your continued presence in our dance program. |
Finally, each of us can be proud to be members of our Kitsap Chapter. Thru growing pains, learning curves, listening and education we are growing and thriving. Dancing in a great new venue and enjoying continuous learning together in classes has grown new friendships while providing additional monthly dancing here on the Peninsula. Thank you to those who help make this continually happen either by your hard work or your attending our dances.
Please register for classes early whenever possible. Having funds in hand well prior to the start of a series insures our ability to avoid cancellation due to lack of participation.
Always bring leather soled dance shoes and come early so you have time to be ready and in place on time.
HAPPY SUMMER EVERYONE!
Rumba the Dance of L-O-V-E
Sheila Spiro
The chapter’s monthly dance lesson for July, August, and September is the RUMBA
The Rumba was introduced into the U.S.A. in the 1930's. Typical of Latin-American dances, emphasis is placed on movements of the body rather than the feet. However it’s never as easy as it looks and remember, the feet are the “roots” which produce the body movement. Confused by this concept? Only a skilled instructor can infuse the technique which helps a dancer achieve the most appealing look in their dance. But the following describes what is happening “at the roots.”
With only a transfer of weight from one foot to the other on beat 1 of each bar, and the absence of an actual step on this beat, the dance has developed a very sensual character. Beat 1 is a strong beat of the music, but all that moves on that beat are the hips, so the music emphasizes the dancing of the hips. This together with the slow tempo of the music (100 - 108 beats/minute) makes the dance very romantic. Steps are actually taken on beats 2, 3, and 4. Weight transfer and turns are performed on the intervening half beats. Again, as in the Samba, the weight is kept forward, with forward steps taken toe-flat, and with minimal movement of the upper torso throughout.

Yes it is on again this fall. The dance contest is a fundraising event for the Combined Federal Campaign. USA Dance Kitsap Chapter is assisting as a method of promoting dancing in the community. The Dance Contest will be held on November 7th, at the Mountain View Middle School Gymnasium. The rhythm for the contest is the CHA CHA. As added features of interest dance demonstrations by local groups (the Chapter Dance Team) are being considered. The event is primarily for beginning dancers who participate in dance lessons starting several weeks prior to the contest. Watch for more information at the Chapter dances in August and September.

The Best Stay-Young Secret Yet.
It’s dancing! Here’s why it does a body (and mind) good.
From an article in “Health Magazine” by Susan Hall.
Need a reason to hit the dance floor? “Recent research suggests that dance provides both physical and psychological benefits” says Christina Devereaux, public relations chairperson for the American Dance Therapy Association.
MOVE TO MUSIC AND…..
|
|
Boost Your Memory!! According to a study by the National Institute on Aging, dancing pumps up the memory. In fact, regular boogying can reduce your risk of Alzheimer’s by 76 percent.
|
|
Ease Your Stress!! Cutting a rug puts worries into perspective, according to University of London researchers, because it allows a physical and emotional release. |
|
|
|
Lift Your spirits!! “Dancing elevates mood by activating the brain’s pleasure circuits” Devereaux says, so you can groove your way to a better state of mind.

Meet The Dancers
Interview by Kelly Ham A member and volunteer of USA Dance Club
This month we are getting to know Thio and Fanny Budiman
Q. Where are you from and how did you two meet?
|
|
A. Fanny is from Hong Kong and I come from Indonesia. I came to America in 1970. I was a mechanic by trade for Yamaha. I met Fanny in Los Angeles at a restaurant. She was a ballroom dancer, but I only danced in nightclubs for fun.
Q. Tell us about your family.
A. We have two daughters and one son, we also have a five year old grandson who lives in Seattle and is taking ballet classes.
Q. How did you start dancing Thio?
A. Fanny gave me an ultimatum, either learn how to ballroom dance or else! So I had my first lesson in 1997 and two months later we were in Canada competing. I used to compete in badminton and table tennis tournaments, so I figured if I was going to learn to dance my motivation was to compete because I like the challenge. We danced in the Newcomer Division and out of 26 couples we came in fifth place!
Q. What is your favorite dance rhythm?
A. Fanny’s favorite is the Waltz, and I love Tango and Waltz.
Q. Are you still competing?
A. We haven’t lately, but we are going to compete in October at the Seattle Northwest Original National Qualifying Event. We usually practice at the gym on the basketball court early in the morning.
Q. Do you like to travel?
A. We usually travel just to competitions but we like to go to Las Vegas and our favorite vacation was going to Hawaii with our whole family.
Q. What is your best dance advice?
A. Enjoy the music, move with it. Let the music bring the emotions of the dance to help you interpret it.
USA Dance Inc., Kitsap Chapter 1025 Appreciates the support of this Business.
